Silver loses sheen, crashes 10%

MUMBAI: Silver prices crashed in the international markets on Friday on speculative unwinding, and tracking the global trend the price of the metal also feel in the domestic market. During the day's trade in the Mumbai bullion market, silver prices closed at Rs 56,875 per kg, down Rs 6,530, or 10.3%, from its Thursday close. The crash in silver prices was even more severe in the international market where the price crashed nearly 14% to $32.61 to an ounce, from $37.82 the previous day. And in the futures market in India, on MCX, prices of different contracts on silver were down between 11% and 12% during closing hours.

With the US dollar gaining strength, there is a good chance that gold prices could also move the silver's way in India. Since the prices of both the precious metals are linked to the dollar, any strength of the US currency leads to a slide in the prices of these assets, and the same is happening now, market players pointed out.

Looking at the speculative selling trend, bullion market veterans now predict silver prices to fall to around Rs 50,000 over the next few days since a large number of speculators are now trapped with their positions in silver, bought at higher levels recently. "It should fall to the Rs 50,000 level in a few days. After silver prices shot up to Rs 75,000 level a few months ago and then came down sharply to stabilize around Rs 60,000, there was substantial buying. Now that the price has crashed much below that level, there should be more downside," said Lalit R Jagawat, director, Nakoda Bullion, one of the leading bullion traders in India. Prices of silver in the domestic market had shot up to Rs 75,020 on April 25 this year but then came down sharply and was hovering around the Rs 60,000 level for a few months.

The weakness in the prices of precious metals, and not only of silver, is also attributed to the strength of the dollar that is leading to a global sell-off in commodities. On Friday, gold prices in the international market fell 3% to hover around the $1,700 per ounce level. And tracking the international prices, in the Mumbai market the price of the yellow metal fell 2% to Rs 27,475 per 10 grams. From its all time high of Rs 29,000 earlier this month, the prices of gold, one of the most preferred safe haven investments, is now down 5.3%. With substantial speculative interest still remaining in the yellow metal, the price could go down further, local bullion trades said.

In the local market, the fall in the price of gold is much lower than that in the global market, mainly because the rupee is weakening because of the strength of the dollar.

On Friday, the rupee nearly touched the 50 level to a dollar, but closed at 49.43, stronger by 15 paise.

Gold loses $US100 value in a day

Commodities like gold and copper slid again today, dragging a benchmark index to its lowest since late November as investors sold risky assets on fears governments had done too little to head off a global recession.

Gold prices slumped more than $US100 an ounce today, the biggest fall on record in dollar terms, as traders sold to cover losses, while global stocks edged up on expectations the European Central Bank will take new measures to contain the euro zone debt crisis.

Trading was volatile, capping one of the most tumultuous weeks on record for world markets as fear of a Greek default and a gloomy Federal Reserve prognosis for the US economy sparked a sell-off in stocks and commodities and drove investors to the safe-haven US dollar and Treasuries.

A pledge by G20 policy makers that they will calm the global financial system failed to appease investors, who are concerned that authorities are unable to respond effectively to the mounting euro zone debt crisis and sluggish growth in major world economies.

Gold slumped more than 6% at one point - its biggest drop since the financial crisis in 2008 - to hit its lowest since early August as a slide turned into a free-fall, with weeks of volatility and talk of hedge fund liquidation wrecking its safe-haven status.

"The bull case for gold is on pause for the near term," said Adam Klopfenstein, senior market strategist for precious metals at MF Global in Chicago.

"In the near-term, the flight-to-quality interest in owning gold is also out of the window as people are not interested in buying it even in the face of fears in the economy. Until it stabilises, I'm staying out of this market."

Spot gold was last at $US1,649 an ounce, after falling to a session low under $US1,628.

US gold futures' benchmark December contract on COMEX settled down 6%, or more than $US101, at under $US1,640 an ounce.

At $127 an ounce, the intraday move was the biggest on record in dollar terms.

Despite its steep decline, gold remained up 16% year-to-date.

Other commodities

Copper posted its sharpest weekly decline in nearly three years; silver fell 14% to a seven-month low; oil fell to six-week lows, off as much as 9% for the week.

Investors were bracing for a slowdown in demand for raw materials after a week of news that included a downgrade of Italian debt; the third month of contracting Chinese factory data; and indices pointing to slow-growing business in Europe.

"Financial markets are sick and tired of the authorities in Europe and in the US twiddling their thumbs and not doing substantive things to solve this crisis of the global economy," said Barton Biggs, managing partner at New York-based Traxis Partners.

The US Federal Reserve on Thursday (NZT) announced of a plan to buy $US400 billion in long-term debt, disappointing many who had expected bolder steps to boost the US economy.

The Reuters-Jefferies CRB index, a 19-commodity global benchmark for the asset class, fell 1.75% on Friday, landing at its lowest point since late November.

Chinese data released yesterday (NZT) showed the factory sector contracted for a third straight month in September, while a measure of inflation picked up.

The data suggested that the world's second largest economy may not be able to counter a slowdown in the United States and Europe.

The Chinese data slammed industrial metals, as traders who had piled into those commodities with the view that China would eat up demand promptly sold them off.

London Metal Exchange (LME) benchmark copper plunged $US314 to finish at $US7,360 a tonne.

Copper posted an 18% weekly decline, its sharpest since the post-Lehman Brothers collapse in October, 2008.

The sell-off extended to other industrial metals.

Aluminum was down to its lowest price since November 2010, and nickel to a December, 2009 low.

But silver turned negative, with the spot price down almost 1% for the year.

Wheat spared

Wheat bucked the commodities rout due to market fundamentals - drought and a potential supply shortage.

But other agricultural commodities succombed to the sell-off, as did energy markets.

US corn futures fell 1.8% and touched a 12-week low.

US crude futures fell 66 cents to settle at $US79.85 per barrel. ICE Brent crude lost $US1.52 to $US103.97 a barrel after dropping to $US103.43, the lowest price since Aug. 9.

ICE raw sugar futures closed at a 3-1/2-month low on Friday and arabica coffee saw its weakest weekly performance since March 2008.

The US dollar index, which is set against a basket of major currencies, posted a 1.9 pct gain on the week, forcing some traders to liquidate oil contracts since the commodity is priced in dollars and becomes more expensive as the dollar strengthens.

Bihar takes a leaf out of DK’s Panchayat Raj

MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, which recorded success by bagging Nirmal Gram Puraskar for all its 203 gram panchayats, is becoming a role model for the Bihar government. Best practices in the Panchayat Raj set up in the district will soon be adopted by the Bihar government, which is gearing up to bring reforms in rural administration.
Legislators from different political parties and officials from Bihar arrived in Mangalore on Thursday to study the manner in which various schemes are being implemented in villages in the district with a view to adopt the same development modules for villages in their state.
Zilla Parishat and Panchayat Raj Committee (ZPPC), the committee set up by the Bihar government comprising 20 members including eight MLAs and officials, interacted with Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat chief executive officer K N Vijayaprakash and other officers here. Launch of 3 New Car Insurance Rate Sites Announced

Online PR News – 09-September-2011 –Get a Car Insurance Quote, which helps consumers compare auto insurance rates from top insurers, has launched 3 new websites based on specific make and models. The sites were developed based on the popularity of certain vehicles for the company's users. Three of the most popular cars are the Scion tC, Audi A4, and Dodge Charger. In a recent poll, many users asked that more information be available related to their specific vehicles prior to beginning the quoting process. In order to satisfy this request, the company moved forward with the development of these sites.
If you drive a Scion tC, you will want to visit Scion tC Insurance. The tC, built by Toyota, was redesigned for 2011, gaining slightly more interior room and new exterior styling. This peppy two-door coupe is sleek, sexy, and fun to drive. And let's not forget that it's highly affordable and incredibly customizable.
The Audi A4 is one of the best values in the luxury car category. It offers mature styling, solid performance, impeccable build quality, and Quattro versions are highly stable under inclement weather conditions. If you own an A4, you might want to visit Audi A4 Insurance. Unfortunately, too many A4 owners fork over more than they should in the way of insurance. For that reason, they should compare local rates before purchasing their next policy.
The Dodge Charger is a modern-day power cruiser, a throwback to the late '60's muscle cars (but with four doors). Redesigned for 2011, the Charger is a favorite among performance enthusiasts, police departments, highway patrol units, and even corporate fleet managers. If you own a Charger, then Dodge Charger Insurance is the site for you. You can find trim-specific financing, leasing, and insurance information, whether you drive the V6, Hemi V8, or the might SRT8.
Each of these sites offers an industry blog that keeps track of model news. Of course, users can compare quotes from top auto insurance companies across the country - for free!

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has showered praises on Salman Khan and called him number one box office star.

"I feel Salman is ahead of me. Avril Lavigne - 'Wish You Were Here' Lyrics & Music Video

Avril Lavigne let out her tears, all of them real, in her new music video for 'Wish You Were Here.' Watch the clip here and read the lyrics.
Avril Lavigne is typically a tough, punk rock chic who doesn't let anyone or anything get her down. In her video for 'Wish You Were Here,' she shows the softer side of her life.

Avril Lavigne Covers Kesha's 'Tik Tok'
'Wish You Were Here' takes a minimalist approach as most of the shots include Avril crying, sitting in a bathtubs, and on one occasion setting a flower on fire. And to make the look and feel come across as more authentic, Avril explained on Twitter that her emotions were produced without any stage tricks like onions.
'It's simple but emotional. Raw and real. Stripped down,' Avril tweeted.
                               I can be tough

I can be strong

But with you, It's not like that at all
Theres a girl who gives a shit

Behind this wall

You just walk through it
And I remember all those crazy thing you said

You left them running through my head

You're always there, you're everywhere

But right now I wish you were here
All those crazy things we did

Didn't think about it just went with it

You're always there, you're everywhere

But right now I wish you were here
Damn, Damn, Damn,

What I'd do to have you

Here, Here, Here

I wish you were here
                                                                  Damn, Damn, Damn,

What I'd do to have you

Near, Near, Near

I wish you were here.
I love the way you are

It's who I am don't have to try hard

We always say, Say like it is

And the truth is that I really miss
All those crazy things you said

You left them running through my head

You're always there, you're everywhere

But right now I wish you were here
All those crazy things we did

Didn't think about it just went with it

You're always there, you're everywhere

But right now I wish you were here
Damn, Damn, Damn,

What I'd do to have you

Here, Here, Here

I wish you were here
Damn, Damn, Damn,

What I'd do to have you

Near, Near, Near

I wish you were here.
No, I don't wanna let go

I just wanna let you know

That I never wanna let go

Let go, Oh, Oh,
No, I don't wanna let go

I just wanna let you know

That I never wanna let go

Let go, Let go, Let go...
Damn, Damn, Damn,

What I'd do to have you

Here, Here, Here

I wish you were here

Dilip Kumar's in good health: Saira Banu

All is well with actor Dilip Kumar. The actor's wife Saira Banu has clarified that her husband is in good health.

She said, "For every such rumour there are a trillion prayers going up to the Almighty from his fans, well wishers and family members to give him long life and good health. I understand the concern of the media and have no complaints. I am distressed that there are idle minds which come up with such rumours as some kind of a past time at regular intervals to spread needless anxiety and panic. I request the mischief makers whoever they are to use their spare time and abilities for good work and in good ways.''

Rumours about the actor's ill health every now and then have angered Saira Banu. She said, "I am releasing this statement with a tinge of displeasure because this is not the first time such a rumour has spread without any basis, reason or cause. I have been woken up from sleep at odd hours this time and on previous occasions by phone calls seeking to know the fact and my staff and close friends have also had to answer calls at odd hours just because some sadistic mind has been at work and has triggered a distasteful rumour."

Gail Compton: Owls are winter nesters

Fall approaches and owls are beginning their annual courtships. Woods are coming alive with the sounds of Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Barn Owls, and Screech Owls

Adult owls pair off in a process called "bonding," lasting for the life of each owl. In late August, September and October, owls return to their nesting territories and reestablish their bonds, signaling each other audibly and visually. Great Horned Owls have a rhythmic "h-hoo, h-hoo, hoo-hoo-hoo" and are called "hoot owls." As they re-establish their bond, they pick out a tree in the nesting territory and begin to build a nest. Great Horned Owls are terrible nest builders: two twigs and a leaf will be about all they'll put into a nest.

Much of the time a Great Horned will time-share a nest with a bird that nests only in the spring. Crows, Red-Shouldered Hawks and Osprey create well-built large nests high in trees and don't seem to mind if a Great Horned uses it in the winter. In northeast Florida, owl eggs are usually laid in November and December. The young hatch in December/January and leave the nest early spring.

This schedule is followed, give or take a month, by most owl species.

If you have a bonded pair of Barred Owls, the call is distinctive: "Who Cooks For You, Who Cooks for You-all?" The Barred Owl and the Screech Owl are tree cavity nesters and will accept an owl nest box (go to "building owl nest boxes" on the Internet).

The Barn Owl is a great help in keeping rodent and pigeon populations in balance. This is our only white owl. It has varying amounts of soft gold and brown on the back and top of the wings but you usually see the white breast as the Barn Owl flies overhead. Describing calls of Barn Owls is almost impossible. They make a wide range of unearthly sounds: yelps, hisses, screams, rasps and whoops (they do not hoot) and will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Never fear, the Barn Owl is mild tempered and a very valuable pest controller.

The smallest of our owls is the Screech Owl. Adults are only seven or eight inches high and look like miniature Great Horned Owls, including tufts of feathers on the head called "horns." Their courtship calls are quite beautiful. The long trilling calls used to identify a bonded partner are lovely to hear.

Flood situation worsens in Orissa

BHUBANESWAR: Flood situation in Orissa worsened on Friday with the opening of 59 gates of Hirakud dam to discharge excess rain water, even as the state government geared up to meet the threat.

Around 10.5 lakh cusec of water flowed into Hirakud dam due to unabated rains in Chhattisgarh, water level touched 628.5 ft as against the reservoir level of 630 ft, chief engineer of Hirakud reservoir S K Mishra said.

In view of the rising water-level, a total of 55 sluice gates and four crest gates have been opened to maintain a balance between inflow and outflow, he said, adding that about 9.8 lakh cusec of water was being released now.

There are 64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates at the Hirakud dam for discharge of excess water, officials said.

Following discharge of more water from Hirakud dam, about 13 lakh cusec of water was now flowing through Khairmal and it is likely to reach Munduli near Cuttack, water resources department secretary Suresh Mohapatra said.

A high alert has already been sounded in 11 districts while the government apprehends a severe flood threat in Mahanadi delta area comprising four districts of Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur, sources said.

In addition, districts like Nayagarh, Puri, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh would also be affected due to the flood in Mahanadi river system, they said, adding that people in low-lying areas were asked to move to safe places.

The government is ready to launch relief and rescue operation, while arrangements were being made for air-dropping food and other essential commodities.

Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) has also been kept ready for undertaking rescue and relief.

GTL Infrastructure Submits Debt Recast Plan

MUMBAI -- GTL Infrastructure Ltd. has submitted its debt restructuring plan to its group of lenders, a person familiar with the matter said Friday.
"The plan is yet to be approved," the person said, asking not to be named. It wasn't immediately known who the creditors of the company are.
A report on television channel ET Now cited sources as saying that a draft recast plan had been approved by the lenders and that the final plan is likely to be cleared in November.
Shares of GTL Infrastructure and founder GTL Ltd. surged on the news. At 0810 GMT, GTL Infrastructure was up 14% at 14.33 rupees and GTL Ltd. was trading 31.7% higher at 69.40 rupees. The benchmark Sensex was 1.4% lower.
GTL Infrastructure is one of India's largest telecom tower operators which isn't aligned to any mobile services firm. It has been growing aggressively mostly through debt-funded acquisitions. Falling tariffs and recent scandals in the telecom sector have moderated growth, in turn leading to fewer mobile operators renting telecom towers, thus hurting GTL Infrastructure. Its April-June net loss more than quadrupled from a year earlier as interest costs more than doubled.
In July, GTL Infrastructure had said that its board approved restructuring the company's debt and that it would send a debt recast proposal to a corporate debt restructuring cell formed by its creditors.

Hyundai i30, the second generation: first official pictures and information

Hyundai has released today the first official pictures of the second generation of the compact i30. It comes with a greatly improved design, the interior is also more attractive.

After six years after the official launch of the European market, Hyundai i30 comes with a new face and a new range of engines announces the second generation of the Korean model.

Built on the same platform that is developed his "brother" Kia Cee'd, Hyundai i30 so far stayed in the shadow of the chapter design Kia, Hyundai those preferring to attract customers with something higher average age. Well, with the second generation of the i30, Hyundai is stripped and displays a worn look young and full of dynamism, in line with recent age range of the Korean manufacturer. Line "fluidic sculpture," started with the release of ix35, he looks like a new face, the compact, brand philosophy already present on almost the entire range of Hyundai except for Santa Fe SUV and Veracruz.

Positive changes affecting the car's exterior and interior design. Thus, if the outside we are dealing with a radical stylistic change, inside the old i30 leaves a much more colorful interior, characterized by shapes and lines reminiscent of those of the compact sports Veloster.

Customers that will be targeted for Hyundai i30 will have four engines, two petrol and two diesel. The chapter comes to a 1.4 petrol 100 bhp and a 1.6 GDI 140 horsepower, while diesel fans will be able to order a 90bhp 1.4 CRDi and 1.6 CRDI 126 bhp. All four units will be coupled to a standard six-speed box, customers with an optional automatic transmission available with the six reports.

Official debut of the new i30 will be held at the Auto Show in Frankfurt, September 13, as dealers will receive the Korean model showrooms in the first half of next year. Estate version will follow in the autumn of 2012, while a three-door version - a first for the i30 range - will appear on the market in 2013.
It remains to be seen whether the design language recently adopted by more and more models from Asian producers will have results.

In fact, Hyundai has already announced that they aspire to sell at least half a million cars in Europe. Even next year. An ambitious target, considering that Asian manufacturer hopes for this year amounts to more than 400,000 units.

Third mail warns Ahmedabad, IM mail traced to WB(DELHI BLAST)

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) sources on Friday told CNN-IBN that the e-mail supposedly sent by the Indian Mujahideen claiming responsibility for the Delhi blast has been traced to West Bengal. However, efforts are still underway to trace the IP address of the Indian Mujahideen e-mail.
Third e-mail threatens attack in Ahmedabad
Sources have told CNN-IBN that the third e-mail related to the Delhi High Court blast has been deciphered. The name of Ahmedabad has figured in the e-mail which was sent under a numerical code, which has been deciphered. The e-mail threatens an attack in Ahmedabad. Gujarat, specifically Ahmedabad has been put on a high alert. Home Minister P Chidambaram meanwhile has advised other states to remain vigilant.
Delhi blast: All four reports contradictory
Meanwhile, Preliminary forensics report on the Delhi High Court blast that contradict each other sent to NIA. Home Ministry and NIA receive forensic report from CFSL Gandhinagar, CFSL Hyderabad, CRFSL Delhi and NSG.
Sources say all four reports contradict each other. The only commmon point between the four reports is that a Nitrate based compound was used in the Delhi blast. One report says that RDX was used others say PETN. NIA has now asked for a final reports from all the four labs.
After the HUJI e-mail originating from Kishtwar claiming responsibility, a new mail allegedly from the Indian Mujahideen emerged on Thursday taking responsibility for the blast. The Delhi Police have announced a RS 5 lakh award for anyone who can provide a lead.
The death toll from Wednesday's blast now stands at 13. Two of the 91 injured remain in a critical condition. The National investigation Agency, which is spearheading the probe into the blasts has taken five people for questioning so far.
On Thursday morning, the investigators had managed to identify a cyber-cafe in Kishtwar near Jammu from where the e-mail claiming responsibility by Harkat-ul-jehad was allegedly sent.
Its owner and 3 others were detained for questioning and though investigators say they are probing both mails, they may well be red herrings. By Thursday noon the Uttar Pradesh police detained a person in Balrampur as he allegedly resembled one of the sketches.

4 Staten Island post office branches taking part in 'Passport Day' on Sept. 17

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- On Sept. 17, the Department of State will host its third annual "Passport Day in the USA." U.S. citizens can apply for a passport book or card at all regional passport agencies, including post offices and clerks of court.
There will be four post offices participating on Staten Island from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., said acting customer relations coordinator Joan Velazquez.
A version of this report posted on SILive.com yesterday gave an incorrect date for the event.
The St. George Post Office, at 45 Bay St., the Stapleton branch at 160 Tompkins Ave., the New Dorp branch at 2562 Hylan Blvd. and the Castleton Corners office at 550 Manor Rd. will be open Sept. 17 and accepting passport applications, Ms. Velazquez said.
"They'll be taking photos at some of the post offices," Ms. Velazquez said.
The St. George and New Dorp offices will offer photo services, she added.
"Passport Day in the USA" is offered as a convenience for working U.S. citizens, who might not be able to show up to apply for a passport in person (as is required with first-time applicants) said Elizabeth Finan, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
Since 2009, Americans traveling to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean Islands must present a passport, Ms. Finan said.
"It's also a great document for identity," Ms. Finan said. "And you never know when you will need a passport."
The New York Passport Agency in Manhattan, at 376 Hudson St., will be accepting passport applications or renewals Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but there will be no photo service available.
Residents can apply at the agency without an appointment for a standard processing that takes between four and six weeks, or they can pay an additional $60 for the expedited service and receive their passport in two to three weeks.
First-time adult applicants (16 years of age and older) must pay a $25 "execution fee" along with $140 for a book and card, $110 for only a book or $30 for only a card.
Passport renewal applications for adults do not include an "execution fee," and the fees for both a book and card or a separate book and a card are the same as first-time applications.

Rugby World Cup 2011: New Zealand 41-10 Tonga

New Zealand launched their bid for a first World Cup title since 1987 with a comfortable victory over Tonga in the opening match of the 2011 tournament.
The hosts led 29-0 through first-half Israel Dagg and Richard Kahui braces.
Kurt Morath then landed a penalty for Tonga on the stroke of half-time.
Jerome Kaino scored the hosts' fifth try before Alisona Taumalolo grabbed a well deserved try for Tonga, but Ma'a Nonu added a late sixth for the All Blacks in the Pool A game in Auckland.
With four tries on the board before half-time it looked being the perfect start to the tournament for New Zealand, who once again go into the event as the number one ranked team in the world, as they look to lay the ghost that has haunted them through the last five World Cups.
Perennial favourites going into the tournament, they have failed to become world champions since the inaugural event, also on home soil, back in 1987.

WORLD CUP WINNERS

  • 1987: New Zealand
  • 1991: Australia
  • 1995: South Africa
  • 1999: Australia
  • 2003: England
  • 2007: South Africa
Despite never having lost a pool game in the history of the World Cup a series of defeats in the knock-out stages has led to them being labelled chokers by some critics.
Any early nerves among the players - and a nation of four million desperate for their heroes to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup for a second time - would have been eased by an excellent first-half performance at the refurbished 60,000 capacity Eden Park.
But their disjointed second-half display will surely mean more than a few sleepless nights.
In fly-half Carter they have the all-time leading points scorer in Test history, ahead of England's Jonny Wilkinson, and he slotted an early penalty to register the first points of the tournament.
With the scoreboard ticking over the All Blacks relaxed and the tries soon began to flow.
Dagg scored the first, stepping inside the last defender after Kahui had made the first incision off Carter's inside ball.
Tonga players rush to congratulate Alisona Taumalolo after his tryTaumalolo's try was the least Tonga deserved in Auckland
The fly-half failed to land the conversion from out wide but the second try soon followed as Kahui finished off another sparkling move, with the key moment being Sonny Bill Williams' blind reverse flick to Isaia Toeava as the wing came back on the angle to open up the defence.
Inside-centre Williams was denied a try of his own after obstruction by Richie McCaw but the former rugby league star then sent Dagg over for his second, before a fine one-handed pass from the full-back gave Kahui the chance to complete his double.
Carter converted all three scores to give New Zealand a 29-0 lead, with an out-classed Tonga side finally getting on the board on the stroke of half-time through a penalty from Morath, one of seven members of the Tonga squad born in New Zealand.
The All Blacks were slightly off their game in the opening stages of the second half and it took 19 minutes for the fifth try to arrive, although Toeva had been denied for a foot in touch before Kaino powered over after a fine chip and gather from Kahui.
As the game wore on Tonga finally began to secure a decent amount of possession and they were rewarded when Taumalolo burrowed over from short range for a well-deserved try, which was converted by Morath.
If Tonga had won the second half it would have been a big set-back for the All Blacks after their impressive early display, but they had the final word as replacement Colin Slade sent outside centre Nonu powering over, with the substitute fly-half converting to give the scoreline a more positive sheen.
New Zealand: Dagg; Kahui, Nonu, S Williams, Toeava; Carter, Cowan; Woodcock, Hore, O Franks, Thorn, A Williams, Kaino, McCaw, Vito.
Replacements: Jane for Toeava (62), Slade for Carter (74), Weepu for Cowan (53), B Franks for Woodcock (45), Flynn for Hore (74), Whitelock for Thorn (56), Boric for Vito (75).
Tonga: Lilo; Iongi, Hufanga, Ma'ilei, Piutau; Morath, Moa; Tonga'uiha, Lutui, Filise, Hehea, Tuineau, Kalamafoni, Maka, Ma'afu.
Replacements: Fisilau for Hufanga (75), Fatafehi for Ma'ilei (41), Taumalolo for Tonga'uiha (53), Taukafa for Lutui (41), Pulu for Filise (53), Timani for Hehea (41), Vahafolau for Maka (54).

Compromise Formula to Save Kannada Actor Darshan from Jail?

Bangalore, Sep 9: The news related to arrest of Kannada superstar Darshan Toogudeep is creating furor among fans of the actor, leading to violence in Vijaynagar, Bangalore.

Thousands of his fans marched into the streets and tried to Gerrao Vijayanagr police station on Friday morning, as soon as Darshan's arrest news was spread like wildfire.

Police had tough time controlling the crowd and had to call for additional unit of police force to the spot.

The much loved sandalwood actor Darshan was in trouble on September 9 morning, after reportedly assaulting his wife Vijayalaxmi in an inebriated state.

He was accused of beating his wife and threatening her by showing the revolver. Immediately after the complaint was filed by his wife at Vijayanagar police station, cops arrested him and are waiting to produce him to the court.
But efforts are on from senior Kannada actors including Ambareesh, Jaggesh and others to reach-out a compromise formula so that, Darshan can be saved from going behind the bars. If Vijayalaxmi agrees to withdraw the complaint, Darshan can escape from legal formalities, but he has already tarnished his image due to this domestic violence.
Amabreesh, speaking to a journalist in Vijayanagar told that,  Vijayalaxmi has agreed for compromise and matter will be sorted out without proceeding further.

On the other hand, Vijayalaxi reportedly told a news person over the phone that, this is purely family matter, and media should not make it a big issue. Every one goes through the family problems, she added.

Unfortunatley, Darshan arrest news has hit the national headlines, as he is popular personality in Kannda filmdom and role model of thousands of youth in Karnataka. His fans are hoping for his smooth escape from severe punishment.

Do doctors recommend same therapy for patients as selves?

Doctors tend to recommend the lower mortality option to their patients

It appears that physicians recommend different treatments for patients than they would choose for themselves. Before you conclude that this is somewhat selfish, please read on. A recent study by a team of sociologists and doctors (Archives in Internal Medicine, April 2011) points to an interesting dichotomy.

The study involved two different scenarios, both hypothetical. In scenario one, the researchers interviewed 500 doctors and asked them to imagine that either they or one of their patients had colon cancer, and they had to choose one of two surgical treatment options.

Both surgeries shared the possibility of 80 per cent success, without any complications.

Of the remaining 20 per cent involving side effects, surgery one had the danger of four different kinds of troubles, such as removal of the colon, or chronic diarrhea, or bowel obstruction, or wound infection. These accounted for a total of 4 per cent complications.

The rest 16 per cent was chances of death or mortality. In surgery 2, there were no complications at all, but the failure rate was 20 per cent, that is, for every 100 people operated for colon cancer, 20 die.

Now, which option is better: surgery with 16 per cent death and 4 per cent complications, or surgery with no complications but 20 per cent chances of death?

In other words, should we risk a higher chance of death but if successful, there will be no additional trouble: a true doctor's dilemma.

The results of the study were interesting. Of the 500 doctors interviewed, 242 responded. Out of these, a significant number of them chose surgery 2 (no side effects but higher chances of mortality) for themselves. In contrast, when asked for recommendation to a patient who comes to them, many of them (60 of the 242) recommended surgery 1 (with lower death chances, but side effects) to their patients.

Scenario 2 involved a flu epidemic. Here the team of researchers interviewed 1,600 primary care physicians and gave them two treatment options for recommendation. One group was asked to imagine that they themselves had been infected with the newly emergent flu virus.

John Wallis

John Wallis (23 November 1616 – 28 October 1703) was an English mathematician who is given partial credit for the development of infinitesimal calculus. Between 1643 and 1689 he served as chief cryptographer for Parliament and, later, the royal court. He is also credited with introducing the symbol {infty} for infinity. He similarly used rac{1}{infty} for an infinitesimal. Asteroid 31982 Johnwallis was named after him.John Brehaut Wallis was born in Ashford, Kent, the third of five children of Reverend John Wallis and Joanna Chapman. He was initially educated at a local Ashford school, but moved to James Movat's school in Tenterden in 1625 following an outbreak of plague. Wallis was first exposed to mathematics in 1631, at Martin Holbeach's school in Felsted; he enjoyed maths, but his study was erratic, since: "mathematics, at that time with us, were scarce looked on as academical studies, but rather mechanical" (Scriba 1970).

As it was intended that he should be a doctor, he was sent in 1632 to Emmanuel College, Cambridge.[1] While there, he kept an act on the doctrine of the circulation of the blood; that was said to have been the first occasion in Europe on which this theory was publicly maintained in a disputation. His interests, however, centred on mathematics. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1637, and a Master's in 1640, afterwards entering the priesthood. From 1643–49, he served as a non-voting scribe at the Westminster Assembly. Wallis was elected to a fellowship at Queens' College, Cambridge in 1644, which he however had to resign following his marriage.

Throughout this time, Wallis had been close to the Parliamentarian party, perhaps as a result of his exposure to Holbeach at Felsted School. He rendered them great practical assistance in deciphering Royalist dispatches. The quality of cryptography at that time was mixed; despite the individual successes of mathematicians such as François Viète, the principles underlying cipher design and analysis were very poorly understood. Most ciphers were ad-hoc methods relying on a secret algorithm, as opposed to systems based on a variable key. Wallis realised that the latter were far more secure – even describing them as "unbreakable", though he was not confident enough in this assertion to encourage revealing cryptographic algorithms. He was also concerned about the use of ciphers by foreign powers; refusing, for example, Gottfried Leibniz's request of 1697 to teach Hanoverian students about cryptography.

Returning to London – he had been made chaplain at St Gabriel Fenchurch, in 1643 – Wallis joined the group of scientists that was later to evolve into the Royal Society. He was finally able to indulge his mathematical interests, mastering William Oughtred's Clavis Mathematicae in a few weeks in 1647. He soon began to write his own treatises, dealing with a wide range of topics, continuing throughout his life.

Wallis joined the moderate Presbyterians in signing the remonstrance against the execution of Charles I, by which he incurred the lasting hostility of the Independents. In spite of their opposition he was appointed in 1649 to be the Savilian Chair of Geometry at Oxford University, where he lived until his death on 28 October 1703. In 1661, he was one of twelve Presbyterian representatives at the Savoy Conference.

Besides his mathematical works he wrote on theology, logic, English grammar and philosophy, and he was involved in devising a system for teaching deaf-mutes. Although William Holder had earlier taught a deaf man Alexander Popham to speak ‘plainly and distinctly, and with a good and graceful tone’.[2] Wallis later claimed credit for this, leading Holder to accuse Wallis of 'rifling his Neighbours, and adorning himself with their spoyls. Felsted School is an English co-educational independent school for both day and boarding pupils, located in the village of Felsted near Great Dunmow in north-west Essex. It is in the British Public School tradition, and was founded in 1564 by Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich (also known as Riche) who, as Lord Chancellor and Chancellor of the Court of Augmentations, acquired considerable wealth from the spoils of the Dissolution of the Monasteries including the nearby Leez Priory, which he enlarged and made his own home. Felsted is one of the 12 founder members of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference,

Mobile call tariffs to increase further

NEW DELHI: Mobile call tariffs, which were hiked by many telecom operators a couple of months ago, are expected to witness further increase in the coming months back as the operators would try to offset the lower revenue from rural markets, said Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal said.

In rural markets, consumers typically make fewer phone calls than in cities and towns, Mittal said while speaking at an industry event here, citing rising pressure on margins and increasing costs to have forced the operators to hike tariffs. With the entry of new players and the ensuing tariff wars, the high priced bidding for 3G auctions, which saw top operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications coughing up 12,295 crore and 8,583 crore respectively, had led to margins being hammered.

Bharti had, in fact, paid an additional 3,314 crore for acquiring broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum as well. Bharti's move to hike call tariffs gave a break to the cut-throat competition among telecom operators offering dirt cheap tariffs.

While speaking on allocation of spectrum, Mittal said the government should be liberal and judicious.

He said the operators have paid far too much to obtain spectrum for offering third-generation mobile phone services.

Question corner - Earth-Sun distance

How do you measure the distance between Earth and Sun?

Palakkad, Kerala

Let us ask first a related question, namely, “How is the distance between Earth and any planet, measured?” Take for example the planet nearest to the Sun, namely, Venus. This distance to Venus can be obtained at any time during its travel by radar measurements.

For this, a pulse of radio wave is transmitted from Earth and is received when it bounces off Venus and comes back to Earth. Since radio waves travel at the speed of light, by measuring the total time taken for the pulse to come back, the distance can be calculated as: Distance = 0.5 X (time taken by radar pulse to travel both ways)X (speed of light)

Now we come to the other question, namely, the measurement of distance between earth and sun. Obviously we cannot use the earlier radar measurements since the sun itself is a source of intense electromagnetic waves and in addition it is too far away from the earth.

But our measurement of distance between planet and earth will become useful for this important measurement. Let us assume that the distance between Earth and the Sun is ‘R.' To first approximation, the orbits of Earth and Venus are perfect circles around the Sun. Now, let us consider the orbit of Venus. There are two places where the Sun-Venus-Earth angle is 90 degrees.

At these points, the line joining Earth and Venus will be a tangent to the orbit of Venus. These two points indicate the greatest elongation of Venus and is the farthest that Venus will get away from the Sun in the sky with respect to an earth observer. Now, by making observations of Venus in the sky, one can determine the point of greatest elongation. One can also measure the angle between the Sun and Venus in the sky at the point of greatest elongation. In the diagram, this angle will be the Sun-Earth-Venus angle marked as in the right angled triangle. Now, using the trigonometry, one can determine the distance between Earth and Sun R, in terms of the Earth-Venus distance at this time: R= (Earth–Venus distance at point of greatest elongation)/ Cos . We get the distance between the Sun and Earth to be 1.496x10{+1}{+1}metres (nearly 150million kilometers or 93 million miles!).
